What are the Differences in the Treatment Program in Alaska for Drug Addiction for Pregnant and Lactating Mothers?

July 18, 2008

There are a lot of women who are into drug addiction in Alaska who are either already pregnant or are planning a pregnancy. The counseling centers warn such women of the implications that may occur not only to themselves but also to their babies if they get pregnant without caution. Almost all kinds of addictions, right from an alcohol addiction to a heroin addiction in Alaska, can prove seriously detrimental to the growing embryo and even to a baby who is dependent on the mother for breastfeeding. These effects can be quite pronounced and they can cause congenital defects in the baby if not checked in time. That would be quite unfair to the babies, and that is the reason why a lot of effort is being made to check addiction issues in mothers who are planning to get pregnant or those who are already pregnant.

This is not to say that women should not become mothers at all if they are into an addiction. On the contrary, the need of saying this is to make clear that there are treatment options available which the woman must get into before planning a pregnancy. Almost every kind of addiction is treatable, or at least the temptation for the substance can be suppressed for a period of time until the baby has been delivered and weaned from the breast milk. Women who are into a substance abuse in Alaska are told about these possibilities. Options for drug rehab in Alaska are also open for these women; however, the treatment methods employed here would be different to better suit the conditions of the women undergoing treatment there and their babies.
